Is Google Knol a Wikipedia Substitute?

Before Google Knol released there were several rumors, most of them claiming Google knol as a substitute for Wikipedia. But after Knol release, I didn’t find it as a Wikipedia substitute. Actually Knol provides a page to everyone who wants to write. People write what they know and create a new knol page. Usually every page is contributed by single person whereas in Wikipedia hundreds of people contribute on single article.

Google knol is more like Squidoo or Hubpages rather than Wikipedia. Wikipedia is trusted online free encyclopedia. Information Wikipedia contains is mostly genuine and is based on some source or references whereas at Knol each page contains information that a person knows which may not be true. Even though I don’t know much about cars, I can say car has a jet engine at knol because I can share any knowledge I have whether that is real or fake.

So Google Knol cannot be considered as another online encyclopedia but instead it is a place where people share knowledge they have – so it is Google Knol where Knol stands for Knowledge.

  1. Thanks for your post.

Google Knol mustn’t be compared with Wikipedia. They are developed for two different purposes. They have lot of differences. Wikipedia is genuinely an encyclopedia but Google Knol isn’t.
